A three day weekend and then the 29th! The 29th we leave to Frankfurt, which is just a mere 36 hours from a short plane ride home. That's the easiest way to think about it...a way I've been thinking much lately. Kind of like a kid approaching Christmas. I love Ireland, but I love Moscow too, and since I havent seen Moscow in three months, and since I've already been in Ireland for a week, Moscow tends to be on the mind more. A lot more. We have been spending our days doing the typical travelling: pictures, eating, pictures, frisbee, eating, and then more frisbee or pictures. Same routine, same results, same enjoyment.

We are pretty much exploring Ireland out of Killarney, a nice little tourist town that has access to everything that Ireland has to offer. We have traveled the Ring of Kerry, will see the Dingle Peninsula and will surely make it to the surrounding villages full of views, story's, and history. Spending three nights in Dublin to start our Ireland trip, we were able to see much of what it has to offer as it is not that big of a city.

We toured the Guinness Brewery.

And got a free (14€) Beer! It was the freshest beer I'd ever had.

A week more, but here is some scenery...and a little wildlife.

I ranged em at about 30 yards, maybe not that.

Either way, farther than last fall :)

It turns out much of what we heard was describing the islands and rural areas...if there are any. Athens is overpopulated and bursting at the seems. Not much law around here and it is always noisy. Cant get away from the noise. We went to a starbucks just to try and get away, like should be possible in a coffee house, but no luck. No sleep either. The honking never ends. The starbucks was so bad we had to get up and leave to find another one. Amazing how like five girls can make soooo much noise. Not even conversation, just plain noise. Putting us out on the street to risk our lives. Live everywhere in Europe the traffic is seriously dangerous. The lines dictating lanes mean nothing, especially to scooters and motorcycles. I'm pretty sure actually, that there arent any laws for scooters, which isnt good since everyone rides them, and usually with a passenger. Go figure. I dont know how many fender benders we have seen. Too many people to contain. We have been to lots of big cities thus far, but all have had the ability to hide the people or at least maintain some cleanliness and the apperance of order. Athens just cant hack it. Too big and too many people. I dont know how they do it. I dont know how we've survived just three days. Definitely cant understand a word that's being said around me.

The Acropolis is like the little getaway in this city.

DSC_0007.jpg

There are still mobs of people surrounding the sites, but at least you can get your bearings from the top of the hill, and take a breath of semi fresh air. The views are still amazing too, if you can see through the smog.

DSC_1144.jpg

The sites are great as well, I just wish they would take down the scaffolding and seize the restoration efforts. It's not like restoring them is really a great idea. No way it's going to be as good as the original. Meanwhile, we cant see the ruins for what they really are. Still amazing.

DSC_1133.jpg

DSC_1146.jpg

Our place is basically a reflection of our latest luck as well. We booked a two bed, nice looking, affordable place. We got one rickety old bed, a clogged up shower, and a door that essentially doesnt lock...and mosquitos. Yep, already got some bites. I guess I am still optimistic that it's not bed bugs or some other virus passing insect.
Here is a picture of both of us...finally found someone to snap one off for us. Still happy and in good spirits despite the change of luck.

DSC_1134.jpg

It's hot here and nice, but when we leave tomorrow we will be ready for a change of pace.

That would be nice. I wasnt being stupid, and I wasnt being half fast, I got straight robbed, thats what happened. Now my I.D and locked credit cards are floating in a trash heap somewhere in Germany. Thanks Dude in the subway, you man.
The one day I couldnt lock my pack down, the one day we were in Cologne, and the one time I put my wallet in my front pocket. I always, always had my wallet locked down in my pack. Just one day and that was all it took.

We had just transferred what we needed for our five day trip to Greece in our daypacks, had just left the airport for our place, and had just gotten off the last subway for the day when I found it missing. Just a few hours away from waking up at 3am to go to the airport. I mean, wow, just a blur now, but damn, everything went wrong and now...no means. Front pocket huh? that worked. Wish I would have caught him, that way I could justify the extry pound of Leatherman I have been carrying around...woulda put that to good use. Still got my camera though, and my passport. Could be worse. Looking on the bright side. Teetering, but still smiling.

Since last time, we have been traveling like crazy. From Cinque Terra we went to Rome, Venice, Vienna, Prague, Berlin, Cologne, and now Athens! The countryside has been beautiful as well as many of the cities. Places are far different than I imagined too. Athens is huge and a dump. They said Rome was dirty, but it isnt...at least not like here. Berlin was amazing, clean, big, and has an identity, though our place was sick. Even Cologne was nice, despite the one man that I have decided to hate. Venice, despite the big talk that you may hear, really isnt that sweet. Ok, its nice and all, and very unique, but not exactly what you picture. At least not what I pictured. It kind of seems like a hassle, that and it is super easy to get lost in there. No WC's anywhere either. Yeah, that's another thing. In europe, good luck finding a bathroom. It is just ridiculous, you almost need to plan your day around it. Not a laughing matter. Also, another thing that is deceiving...hostelworld.com. It is a lifesaver no doubt, but it is also full of deception. The last two places we have booked for a two beds have been only one (sleeping bags and floor). Also, whatever they say about themselves, especially directions, are probably half-truths or lies all together. It's like rolling the dice every time you book a place. You turn the key when you get there and just hold your breath. The place in Berlin, ha, yuck. Oh, the first place in Prague, I had to wrap the pillow with the pillowcase and both sheets just to think about using it. The comforter wasnt even an option. Wouldnt let a stray dog use it.
Johnny told me not to wipe up beer with it, but I told him it may be best...they may wash it if they found it wet. Maybe not.

There is this technique in Europe that everyone uses when walking down the street. So, instead of acknowledging anyone else in your way, you either look through the person coming, while still secretly looking at them, or you look away all together, keeping semi-focused with peripherals. That way you can pretend not to see anyone, and thus, not move for anything. Everyone does it. Everyone, even super old people. If they catch any sign that you see them...then you are moving for them. Like a mind game with every person. I've tried it and it works. All you have to do is just look away and you can walk in a straight line. Just dont acknowledge anyone else. Think only of yourself and you're fine. People are relentless.

Big cities. It's a chore. Like Dune. A big sand storm just wearing you down. Too many people. Way too many people. Athens is like 6 mil plus. No escape. Beautiful places to see. 3 months of straight travel is borderline too much. Should have gone to Lagos in the middle. Vacation within Vacation is a good idea.
Here are some more pictures. A little bit of everywhere the past week and a half or so.

This is Prague, a beautiful place.

After leaving the Algarve and the beauty of Portugal, we continued on to Northern Spain and the Basque country where we stayed in both Bilbao and San Sebastian, both beautiful cities, but both of them completely nuts. Pretty much no rhyme or reason for anything. I mean, I get the siesta thing, but I still cant account for half of the strangeness. Nothing made sense. It was Monday morning and the streets of Bilbao were deserted until at least 11am, which is when we headed for a different part of town just trying to find some coffee. No luck there either. Nothing open and nobody working, and in a city the size of Spokane. It wasnt until we turned a corner in the old part of town until we saw anyone. Course, they werent working, they were drinking beer and wine in the street. Monday morning. We did eventually find a place to get a cup of coffee, the Cafe Bar Bilbao. Two bites into my croissant a bunch of garbage men came in for a round of shots...and more beers, and of course cigs. Probably just putting in the last little bit of work before their siesta. Sleep the booze off before they go back to work for a good two hours in the afternoon. And I think they were the only ones working that day.

Everything was super layed back in Northern Spain. There was no rush for anything and no need for getting upset. It seems people just went about their business in their own way, and rather than focusing on work and the daily hustle, time was spent with more simple enjoyment. The towns are beautiful and very well kept. They have a system that works and without the headaches. It was relaxing and enjoyable. Also, it was pretty close to Easter, so I think that accounts for at least a little of the strangeness. I think.

Washed away from memory by the adrenaline rush of crashing waves and landscapes that blow the mind, the taste of Lisbon finally gone, and replaced by the sweet taste of Lagos. Mmmm. What they say is true--if you go to Lagos for two days, you will end up there for two months. We were lucky to get out after just two weeks. A properly timed drink from our landlord, Manuel, and we could easily be working on three. The place is just too hard to leave, or maybe too easy to stay, either way it is great--an unforgettable, and true destination.

DSC_0098.jpg

I will start at the beginning. So it was still early in out trip and being on the ball, we were reserving places early, you know, to avoid any problems, hassles, or overly expensive nights. I guess in reality, we were being smart travelers. We had a place booked for downtown Lagos, a good rate, and from what we saw, a no brainer...we had also put down a deposit of 15 euro.
Anxious to get on and off the last leg of the journey, a 30 minute train ride from Tunes to Lagos, Lisbon was behind us and sandy beaches were in our imminent future--and a place to stay. It would be an understatement to say that things were great. We did not see how things could get any better.
But then they did.

Manuel, that Man.

Meeting us on the train, or more like picking us out of the crowd, Manuel was ready to make his pitch. Armed with a pictures, a guestbook of positive tales, and incentives for us to stay with him, we were completely unprepared to deny him--He sold it like a pro.

And I wont lie.
It was the best thing that could have happened to us.
So we ate a little deposit for the other place, in our minds, he earned it. The place we got...you would be too jealous to read if I could appropriately desribe our two week reality, all I can say is that it is a miracle that we are not still there.

DSC_01261.jpg

In total we spent two weeks in Lagos, mostly hanging out on the beaches and checking out the amazing views offered throughout the amazing Algarve. Of course we were able to take advantage of the many touring areas, as we spent one afternoon riding a sailboat to los Grottos, and another three days doing our best at riding waves, but undeniably, much of our time was spent on the beach...tanning months before should be possible.

As it turns out, two weeks just isn't that long in a place as relaxing and easy to stay as Lagos. Its strange even now, how two weeks just all blurrs together, and now, it's over. I am not sure how it happened. I mean, it seems like time should slow down when all you do is relax, but evidently it does not. We did plenty to fill our days, but nothing you would call strenuous...surfing maybe? We played frisbee on multiple beaches, on multiple days, and went swimming too. I guess for lack of a better word, this part of the trip would be considered...vacation. Nice. Couldn't have picked a better spot.

Nobody speaks your language, any custom that you have certainly does not meet the expectations of where you are, Americans, especially men, are treated poorly, and simply finding a place is nothing less than a chore. At every corner there is an obstacle, and it seems that everything you own must be treated like gold--or else it will be gone. ... Getting outside the comfort zone is basically what defines traveling, especially for a prolonged amount of time. Souveniers, no way, not if it's on my back. Wow, and then there is money. Money is like a hundred dollar bill blowing down the street, if you don't grab it tight, then it is gone before you even knew you had it. You just cant let petty things get you down. So what the apartment in Lisbon was fifty square feet and we had a couch for a bed? It unzipped. Was it really that bad that one of us spent the night halfway in the bathroom and halfway in the kitchen, while the other spent the night on a foot and a half wide "cushion." No, it shouldn't anyway. I could be studying, or god forbid--working.. This time is priceless. Only a month in and not trading it for the world, it is worth every penny. And if things are really that bad, then ya know what? This is only four days, the next place has got to be better, right? Or like I just said...work. Chances are, the next place you go will be better, just take Lagos for example. Amazing--beautiful in every way. (Another blog for Lagos soon enough...just as soon as we are gone)...one week under our belts and one more to go. Things could be worse. I mean, right now I am listening to Pink Floyd in a bar called "Shaker," downtown Lagos, sipping on a beer. This, if any, is a great moment in my short existence. Of course I am thinking of those back home living the daily grind, but I will be there soon enough, and no doubt thinking of the precious time that I spent here. Surfing tomorrow, sure, of course. What else do you do in a superb climate in Southern Portugal. Things are good.
I'm savoring every moment that I am here of course, but I am hoping that those who I know will experience the same thing. Sure there are dilemmas and problems, and of course the hometown issues of ever taking a vacation like this, but believe me, it is worth it. I mean, the bartender is whistling like a little kid at the delight of the moment. Do it. Enjoying and experiencing the other world is a necessity, it simply shows you what else is out there--and there is a lot. The people are different, the places are different, but it enchants. The world back home is simply the world back home. There are far too many people to forget that, it is unbelievable just how many people are out there. Although I must say, people are all the same, everywhere you go, there are those you can identify with, and there are those that...well, you wouldn't relate to at home or not. The landscape and culture changes, but people are people. Believe me, culture and landscape are worth seeing, regardless. Our plan is, well, not really a plan at this point. We are going to leave Lagos soon, in hopes of a reality as beautiful as this, maybe in Italy, but we will soon see. We are only hopeful that what else is out there is as beautiful as this place. There undoubtedly will be troubled times throughout, but rest assured, it will be fine, and definitely worth it. I will let you know.

I cant say that anywhere else I´ve been particularly reminds me of this place, but if I find another place like it, I will know that two days is enough. To be fair, there are some nice landmarks worth seeing, and well, they do speak a touch of English. I find other than that I just dont fit it, nor do I have the urge to try. I´ve caught up on some much needed reading though, and for you law/suspense readers out there...Baldacci is every bit as good as Grisham. Also, A walk in the Woods by Bill Bryson...super funny.
I´m not sure what else to say about this place. Sure are a lot of fellas from Morocco trying to pawn off their merchandise though-- i.e. pot, hash, cocaine, fake watches, etc, and there are lots of people holding out plastic cups too.
Maybe I am just ready to go to Lagos, perhaps the thoughts of sandy beaches and a drastically lower population has gotten to my head. I will be there tomorrow, and hopefully with great things to say.

Here is just a preview of Lagos...

We knew the Festival in Valencia was supposed to be a damn sweet thing to see, but wow, we didn´t expect it to be like this. Go ahead and picture the club on a super packed night...shoulder to shoulder, smoke, and mass drinking...Ok, now multiply that by a million and blow the top off the building. That´s the scene at 2pm on any given day during the week long Fallas Festival. It is the celebration of Spring, which basically amounts to celebrating the 4th of July for a week straight. Kicked off by a mega fireworks display and noise rivaling a Pantera concert, the city shuts down for a mid day party. Drinking in the streets, no problem. For this week the motto must be ¨It´s noon somewhere.¨ Although I wish we could have stayed longer than a day, I just dont know how we would have survived it, or made it out with all of our belongings.

DSC_0461.jpg

The city is also bursting with huge Floats at every street corner, each depicting, usually in satirical fashion, a piece of history or current event worth acknowledging. The floats, some costing upwards of a million dollars all have the same fate though...a death by flame to cap the festival off in style. What an expensive pile of ash.
DSC_0418.jpg
Thinking that the festivities were done for the day, our next plan was to sober up and find the train station. We were wrong. ¨A bull fight, why not?¨ All week long starting at 5pm, several bulls are offered up each day to entertainment the people. There was no way we were going to miss this. It turned out being exactly what we expected, and we were happy to see it.

Another half inch of tread off the boots, and perhaps the same amount of added muscles on the ol legs, we finally figured out that indeed the metro in Barcelona works, and for a fairly decent price. Of course, our long meandering treks throughout the city did provide us with views unattainable from the underground and an easier time dozing off at night, but many hours were killed with little else in mind than our destinaton. Truth be told though, every second was enjoyable. Although I´m sure Johnny and I did not see everything this city has to offer--how could you?--we saw a lot, and really, I don´t think we could have seen much more given the time we were here. It´s unreal how many amazing landmarks this place has, any of which would stand out in Moscow, making even it a destination.

Not only has Barcelona proven to be a great place for an extended stay because of what it has to offer, but also because what can be found just a short distance from it. Only thirty miles to the Northwest is Montserrat, an old monestary which sits upon a major outcropping of rocks, above a friendly village. Looking as if built right into the stone, the old buildings stand high with windows in all directons offering an amazing view for those who gaze through.

There is much to do here, and even more to see. We have already made it to the beaches, seen the surfers and the been exposed to the live and let live way of life. People here are the nicest we´ve met, and the weather...I do not miss Moscow. We are headed to the Picasso museum later today, but for now, we´re just finally getting adjusted. A cold, yet nice shower and a full stomach are just two things that give me peace away from home. Friends and family are missed, but hopefully they too will be rewarded after seeing some pictures. Very soon will this site be full of them, but only after I see it through my own eyes.
Talk to you soon.
